Innovation Leaders
Q&A with Alex MacKenzie
Sensera Systems is proud to highlight the leaders who are driving innovation and operational excellence in the field. Alex MacKenzie, a Client Relations Expert at Sensera, has built a reputation as a relentless advocate for her clients and a trusted advisor for contractors looking to modernize their workflows. We sat down with Alex to discuss her approach to site management and how she helps project teams navigate the daily complexities of the modern jobsite.
What does a day on the job look like for you at Sensera Systems?
My day is all about variety. One hour I’m working with a contractor on perimeter security, and the next I’m helping a team use intelligence tools to reimagine their workflows. I’m just as likely to be catching a flight to a remote project as I am hopping in my car to visit a local site. In fact, I treat the back of my car like a “mobile office,” keeping my hard hat and cowboy boots ready so I can be on the ground when a client needs me. My goal is always to find a simple, easy-to-use solution for whatever unique headache a project is facing. I love the creativity required to solve problems in such a chaotic environment. It is incredibly rewarding to bring tangible answers to busy teams.
What conversations do you have on the ground with contractors?
It all starts with asking the right questions and looking at the unique needs of each contractor. Those individual conversations are where our construction industry knowledge really shines. Because we know the reality of the jobsite world, we aren’t just listening to headaches, we’re providing the kind of counsel that helps customers make more informed tech decisions.
Usually, it begins with a superintendent who is just spread too thin. They’ll tell me, “Alex, I feel like I’m already playing catch-up by the time I pull into the lot,” or “I don’t have time to sift through hours of footage to find what I need.”
That is when we walk through the Morning Brief in SiteCloud. It is a daily summary sent straight to their phone so they can see the condition of the jobsite and prepare before they even leave the truck. We also talk safety quite often: our real-time alerts act as a second set of eyes for OSHA hazards, giving them the chance to correct a risk before it turns into an accident. For specific needs, our Search function is like a Google search for your jobsite. Instead of digging through folders, you search for “scaffolding” or “person without hardhat” and find the images in seconds. As a trusted advisor, my goal isn’t just to hand them a camera, it’s to give them their time back.
What are the biggest problems contractors are trying to solve on the jobsite with cameras?
I’d say 90% of it is project safety, security, and progress. But at the root of it, they are looking for help navigating the “potholes” that make it hard to finish a project on time and on budget. I work with project managers who might be in Utah while their jobsites are in North Carolina or Pennsylvania. You can’t be everywhere at once, and keeping tabs through endless calls and travel just pulls you away from the real work. I show them how to use our solution to basically “set it and forget it.” They pull up progress reports or site hygiene from their laptop and immediately know how to adjust the day without having to be there every hour.
How are customers moving beyond “security” and embracing jobsite intelligence?
I see so many “immovable” security trailers sitting dormant in parking lots. I was at a jobsite recently showing a contractor how much more we can do when you unlock visual data. In a 30-minute demo, I can show them how easy it is to mount wireless, solar cameras without trenching and walk them through the software that turns those images into insights. Once the cameras are set up, they start seeing results within 24 hours, everything from proof of PPE adherence to dumpster notifications that keep the site clean. It gives them the visibility they need to build with confidence, knowing the site is safe and the schedule is on track. Once they see that “proof in the pudding,” it opens the doors to much more productive workflows.
What makes Sensera Systems different?
It’s the fact that we are a true end-to-end solution. All the software, services, and support are within the Sensera house. Our tech is built for people who aren’t “tech people.” They want clean, automated reports they can set and forget.
Most importantly, they know they can trust us when things go sideways. I’ve had clients call me in a panic at 6:30 p.m. because of an accident on-site, needing DVR footage immediately. That’s where the “Client Relations” title really matters: it’s about being the person who answers the phone, understands the urgency, and is able to help. That trusted advisor relationship is the “backbone” of support that defines the partnership.
What do you love most about construction?
I love the grit. Jobsites are complex and, at times, total chaos. There is dust, dirt, and a million things going on at once. I love being the person who comes in with solutions to those challenges. Helping each worker maneuver their day with a lot less stress and a lot more confidence is exactly why I do this.
